Wildlife Jeep Safari in Kanha National Park

Four-wheel-drive open jeep safaris are the best way to observe wildlife in the dense, lush green forests of Kanha National Park. Groups of tourists and individuals, accompanied by experienced naturalists, are allowed into the park in 4x4 open jeeps at fixed timings during the early morning and afternoon. The jeeps follow a predetermined route and must leave the park by the appointed time. Many popular wildlife experts and photographers have observed and photographed the members of the largest cat family in Kanha National Park during jeep safaris. Since the jeeps follow fixed routes, the animals are not unduly disturbed.

In Kanha National Park, you can do a jeep safari twice in a single day, once in the early morning and another in the late afternoon, using a six-seater open vehicle. Each vehicle can carry six passengers along with one naturalist and one driver. Before entering the National Park, you need to complete necessary paperwork at the entrance gate, providing vehicle details, naturalist details, visitor information, etc. These formalities usually take about 15 to 20 minutes.

Visitors are advised to drive slowly and cautiously. Navigating within the national park is different from driving on city roads or highways. Encountering a deer on the road or a tiger by the roadside, undisturbed, provides more pleasure than one that runs away. Sighting wild animals in Kanha is exciting but remember that all the animals in the national park are wild. Approaching them closely is not only prohibited but also dangerous. Respect the wild animals and always maintain a safe distance from them; remember, you are in their home, and they have the priority.

Bright colors can disturb the animals. Therefore, during safari rides in the national park, it's advisable to wear muted jungle shades like beige, brown, green, and similar neutral and earth-colored clothes. Keep all your senses alert during park safaris for better wildlife viewing and avoid loud conversations that can disturb the animals and reduce the chances of spotting them. Always use the services of officially authorized guides during the game drives, as they are local, experienced, and familiar with the surroundings. They can take you to the right places at the right time to witness the exceptional wildlife of Kanha National Park.

Wildlife jeep safaris are conducted twice a day in Kanha Tiger Reserve, once in the morning and again in the late afternoon. Each safari lasts for approximately four hours, with a fixed number of vehicles allowed per shift inside the park. The safari timings vary with the seasons, adjusting according to the sunrise and sunset times.

Special Note: There is an option for a full-day safari in Kanha Tiger Reserve, where you are allowed to stay in the park throughout the day. However, this option is available with the permission of forest officials and comes at a fare that is 8-10 times higher than the usual safari. This safari is ideal for professional photographers and wildlife experts, as it offers unrestricted access to any zone of the forest.

Popular Wildlife Safari Zones in Kanha Tiger Reserve

There are four core zones in Kanha National Park: Kanha, Kisli, Mukki, and Sarhi. These core zones are the prime areas for tiger safaris. The remaining area, which includes the Phen Wildlife Sanctuary and the surrounding regions of the core zones, constitutes the buffer zone area and is further divided into four buffer zones: Khatia, Khapa, Sijhora, and Phen within Kanha National Park.

Core Zone: KANHA

Kanha is the most popular zone in the park, known for its open meadows and grasslands, making it perfect for tiger sightings. Located in the central part of Kanha National Park, the Kanha zone offers frequent animal sightings throughout the safari. It features hilly terrains covered with mixed forest and bamboo vegetation. An important point of interest in this zone is Shravan Taal, known for its legendary significance. You can access the Kanha zone from all major entry gates, including Mukki, Khatia, and Sarhi.

Core Zone: SARHI

Situated in the northern part of the forest reserve, Sarhi is the densest area of Kanha National Park. Towering sal trees dominate this zone, which offers the advantage of fewer vehicle crowds. Sarhi is known for common sightings of Sloth Bears, Nilgai, Dholes, and Leopards. It serves as the north entry gate to the Kisli and Kanha zones.

Core Zone: MUKKI

The most popular zone for tiger sightings, Mukki is located on the southern side of the park. It provides common sightings of various wildlife, including Hard-Ground Barasingha, Indian Bison, and numerous water birds. Mukki is also the primary entry gate to Kanha National Park.

Core Zone: KISLI

Similar to the Kanha Zone, Kisli features open grasslands and scenic meadows, providing ideal habitats for major wildlife. This zone offers high chances of animal sightings and clear views of wildlife encounters. Kisli has a healthy tiger population and frequently reports sightings of these big cats. Adjacent to the Kanha Zone, it serves as the western core zone of the park with entry from the west.

Surrounding the four core zones of Kanha Tiger Reserve, there are four buffer zones within Kanha National Park. While tiger sightings are rare in these zones, they provide opportunities to experience wildlife more closely and in solitude.
